The other evening I went to a student production of Eurydice (written by Sarah Ruhl), and it was a wonderful performance. I hadn't been clear in the least of who Orpheus actually was, I knew there was a lyre involved, but after seeing the play, I knew, which actually came in handy when I read The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. How? Because toward the end, when Taro goes down/through/over in/to/in the hotel in search of Kumiko, it is akin to Orpheus going to hell looking for Eurydice. (This was not my idea, but something I read in an interview with whatshisname, the guy who wrote TWUBC. Poor author, remember the title, but not his name.)
Tonight I'm going to see the break-dancing group. Will report later.
